It had a short tail and a long neck, and greatly elongated hand bones (metacarpals) which, with the long fourth fingers, supported the creatures broad wings. Many species of Pterodactylus have been discovered, each species varying in the size and shape of the head. The species illustrated here, Pterodactylus kochi, had long, narrow jaws, which were lined with sharp teeth with which it devoured fish that were its habitual prey.
